Where the ocean meets the river lies another beautiful side of the city, Belem. The protective hills of Belem gave birth to the name of the city in the time of the Phoenicians. In the 12 century Templar knights assist the merchants and sailors, protect the entrance of Lisbon, and on the bank of the Tagus River, they build a the church for the Virgin Mary of Belem. The most imposing monument is the Monastery of Saint Jerome, which started as an 8 year project but lasts for 100, in the beginning of the 16 century, by the time Vasco da Gama, discovers the trade route to India, that rockets Portugal to the golden age of Discoveries. Belem is a walking tour designed as an ideal afternoon trip, where you avoid the big crowded groups, and still have time to enjoy the river, and the history behind it. We start the tour by taking the historical tram from Lisbon to Belem. Te tram take us directly to Belem, where we visit the Church the Imperial Garden, then continue along the shore close to the Discoveries Monument, Belem Tower, and we finish the tour at the shore of the river drinking a coffee.
