Hello Travellers! Tourists in Rome head to Trastevere to try to get a taste of authentic Rome in the evenings. It is, after all, a place full of restaurants, wine bars and ice cream parlours. With old lanes, beer bars and shops open till late in the Summer. Romans will all have their favourite pizza place and pizzerias like Popi Popi have been there for decades, even though now, handsome and charming Italian waiters have been replaced with cheaper foreign labour. So where do the Romans go when Trastevere fills up with tourists in shorts-and-straw-hats--licking-ice creams? To Frascati of course. Just as they always have done. So, If you would fancy a few hours escape from the madding crowd, let's go to Frascati. It's located 20 km south-east of Rome on the Alban Hills and famous for it's white wine. The flora of the area is quite interesting with chestnut forests, palm trees, vineyards and gardens. One of my personal favorite features of Frascati is Miss Poppea, the three breasted woman. She has two breasts for milk and one for wine and makes a great souvenir! We take the train from the Termini station. (It takes about 20 minutes.) LUNCH TIME! As they say "When in Rome, do as the Romans do. " We will pick up our food from the local markets in the square. Local cheeses, olives, artichoke hearts, vegetables grilled and served in olive oil, fresh roasted pork (porchetta), salamis, beans and more... Then we will go one of the local cantina's which only serve water and wine to enjoy the goodies we just have brought. All food will be 0 km! A few years back the phrase “km 0” started to be kicked around in Italian foodie circles. This abbreviation for “kilometro zero” signifies local, low impact primary ingredients, including meats, cheeses, grains, honeys, and has become the ubiquitous buzzword of the late blooming locavore movement in Italy.
