LOCAL TIPS TO STUDY IN GERMANY

by Bogachan Nasman

Germany is one of the biggest countries in Europe. There are some factors that make it both easier and harder to live in Germany as a foreigner. That’s why I will try to list some tips to guide international and Erasmus students according to my own experiences about being a foreign student in Germany.

1- MEET LOCAL PEOPLE

Although there will be a lot of people to help you like your friends from school or other people who are also a foreigner, the best choice to take advice will be the local people. Because they know most of the places that would be useful for you during your stay. Learn what things to do in Germany before or adventure with yourself.

2- FIND A SUPERMARKET

Try to find a supermarket in your neighbourhood. Because shops like Aldi, Lidl, Penny or Netto would reduce your costs of living as they are cheap brands. Plan your meals in order to not get broke at the beginning of the week.

3- TRAVEL AS MUCH AS YOU CAN

As an Erasmus student, It was the best chance in my life to travel. You shouldn't care about the grades so much, you should focus on planning the best travels for your short holidays and even for your weekends :) You can travel whole Germany and most of the Europe during your exchange period in Germany If you plan it well.

4- PARTICIPATE ORIENTATION PROGRAM

Try to participate orientation program of the university or the events of the Erasmus clubs. It will be the first time you will meet other students. Dress well and look good! It will help you to make friends and meet locals. They can also help you to find the things that you can do during your stay.

5- KNOW YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD

When you are settled, take a quick look at your neighborhood. You will definitely find some places, shops, markets, restaurants that will be helpful in the future. It will reduce the risk of facing a problem because you know where to find a thing you need. Following an Erasmus in Germany is great as the country has all the services that any student may need.
